Support for the conservation of the Aramaic language, writing and literature: “Ashlay Nissaba”

The preservation of their mother tongue and writing, as well as their passing on to future generations, is a great challenge that the Aramaeans are facing above all in the diaspora. The language and writing are an important part of the Aramaic culture and has a great importance for the identity of the Aramaeans. The region of Turabdin, situated in the south-east of Turkey, played a special role in Aramaic history; It is considered a cradle of the Aramaic language and culture. There are numerous important Syrian Orthodox monasteries and churches in which the language and script are taught.

In the diaspora there is a lack of appropriate institutions and teachers to maintain the Aramaic language and to teach it. In this way, the number of the Arabs, who are powerful in their language and who are also masters of Scripture, is diminishing. This also endangers the survival of Aramaic literature.

The preservation of the Aramaic language, which was also spoken by Jesus, requires great efforts. The initiative “Ashlay Nissaba” has set itself the goal that the Aramaic language, writing and literature to shine again so that future generations give great importance to their culture and identity
